How this FIRE calculator works

FI number = yearly spending ÷ safe withdrawal rate. At a 4% withdrawal rate that's 25× your yearly spending: the amount where withdrawing 4% a year historically lasted 30+ years.

Savings rate = (income − spending) ÷ income. It's the lever that matters most: it sets both how fast you save and how much you need.

Years to FI: each year your savings grow by the real return and you add what you didn't spend, until the balance reaches your FI number. Using a real (after-inflation) return keeps every figure in today's money.

Want the real numbers instead of guesses?

The hard part is knowing what you actually spend. The GetNeatNumbers FIRE Planner for Google Sheets imports your bank CSV, categorizes every transaction and computes your FI number, savings rate and years to FI from your real spending, then keeps them updated each month.

This calculator is an estimate for education, not financial advice. Returns aren't guaranteed.
